Just came back from spending 2 nights sleeping in a camp for homeless persons at SafeGround in Sacramento.
The Mayor agrees that this camp is not a recreational "campground" in the traditional sense but is a Human Rights sanctuary and their attorney (who owns the land the homeless are living on, Mark Merrin) believes that the ordinances that make "camping" illegal within the city is not the same as what a sleeping area is when homeless persons are occupying it. He is confident that he can win the case that will come out of this encampment and change the camping ordinance to decriminalize campers.
The police are using the CSI unit of the Sheriffs Dept. that take pictures at 6-7am. The group has been raided twice and lost all their belongings while arresting 17 people. Some have lost bikes and trailers, tents, sleeping bags, medicines, the usual. But there was no report from anyone of abuse other than material goods, arrest, etc. Seems the Sac law enforcement are more polite than Eurekas.
SafeGround organizer Maureen Black told me while I was helping to plant the first plants in their camp garden that she will support us when we need them. So good to hear! When we left I told our brothers and sisters not to give up and they sounded determined to stay for the long haul even though it means personal sacrifice for all of them as they learn how to get along with each other under such stressful circumstances.
We could have had a campground in 1992, but there was not a strong enough group at that time to accomplish the daunting task. It is happening all over the country, we ARE going to do it! The time is right!!!!!
See ya at the march!!!!

I am so sick about this decision!! What right does the government have to drive in fancy cars and live in nice houses when the families who have no choice but to stay at home and take care of a handicapped person are the ones who will suffer. I am a single mother of three girls. The youngest is almost eleven months old. She was born with Williams Syndrome and has already had four surgeries including open-heart. I would love to go and work in a "normal" workplace, but have no choice to stay at home and care for my baby who eats from a machine and poops in a bag, can't walk or crawl yet and no child care will take the risk to watch her. I wonder how these politicians sleep at night? Do they realize that the budget cuts they are making are only the ones that affect the sick and poor? How more poor do we need to be? This was not my choice to have a sick baby and IHSS is THE ONLY way I can provide for my family. So I say screw you Arnold...what goes around comes around and if I lose the roof over my head just to that you can take another vacation or star in another stupid movie, I will be sleeping on your lawn and using your budget-cut proposels as my toilet paper!!

The State- its complicit media, its police, its obscenely unfair court system, its imperial agenda, its private property obsession, its genocidal nature- is a thorough teacher on how to treat homeless people. People LEARN to be cruel and to devalue life, and to consider some life disposable.

Articles about violence against homeless people always seem to omit State violence- which has been constant for years.

Hey there, I am rooting for Safe Haven to succeed. I am currently homeless myself and am currently living at Tent City 3 in Seattle. I guess I would not have been supportive of you guys two or three years ago but that was before I became homeless myself.

Hi,

I hope that Safe Haven succeeds and stay strong against threats and harassment. I am one of the founders of Nickelsville in Seattle and a former resident of Tent City 3 (the oldest Tent City in the nation). I also work monitoring a self managed homeless shelter named Safe Haven LOL.I will definitely be rooting for these guys on many levels and I d love to get in touch with the organizers to compare notes. With the recession going on, tent cities are popping up more and more as more and more homeless people are the working poor and those who have lost their jobs and their homes rather than the chronically homeless. These are highly functioning houseless people who take matters (peacefully) into their own hand. These are also the poverty pimps worst nightmares as they do not need "services" and "social workers" but affordable housing.
Ignoring the problem and trying to chase the tent cities away is not going to solve the current economic and housing crisis.

Does any one know of a for profit company named Family In-Home Support Services of Marin City, California? The director was Lanita Hackett and possibly Gayle Glascoe. They wrote 5 bad payroll checks that we cashed and they have disappeared.

I am writing to you to ask you to take action to rescind the cuts proposed by Governor Schwarzenegger to the IHSS program. This is a critical program to so many disabled and elderly individuals in California. We are one such family. I am the single mother of 5 young children, 2 of whom have autism. I am a care provider to my 6 year old twin sons Peter and Luther whose severe autism and the dangerous behaviors that are so common with this disorder prevent them from being able to attend day care so that I might try to replace the hours that could be lost by these cuts. These proposed cuts would be financially as well as emotionally devastating to my family. We would not be able to make ends meet without this crucial program and my sons would probably have to be sent to an institution in order for me to provide for my family. Institutional care costs the state so much more than home care. I can't even imagine the pain of being separated from my children. Our lives are already so difficult and we don't have very many options because of the challenges autism brings to our family. My sons are only 6 years old. I am not ready to give up. These proposed cuts have the potential to ruin so many lives not only in my family, but in so many other Californian families as well .Our disabled, our elderly and our children are the citizens who need the most protection and assistance. Please take action to rescind these unconscionable proposed cuts to the IHSS program. Please help to protect the quality of life for my sons and so many other of our most vulnerable citizens.
Sincerely,
Malificent Page
